Methodist used a three-run ninth inning to rally for a 5-4 win in the second game of Saturday's USA South baseball doubleheader against Mary Baldwin. The host Monarchs also won the first game 11-4.
In the opener, Methodist broke the game open early with six runs in the third inning and single runs in the fourth and fifth. MBU scored twice in the sixth and twice in the eighth, but was unable to climb out of the early hole.
Blake French, who had two of MBU's seven hits in the game, and
Tucker Hensley had RBI hits in the first game for the Fighting Squirrels.
In the nightcap, MBU scored single runs in the last three innings to take a 4-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning.
Michael Robertson and
Michael Muller each had RBI singles while Hensley and
Josh Lallo contributed run-scoring sacrifice flies for MBU's offense. In the final inning, Methodist took advantage of three MBU errors, two walks, a hit batsman and a single to pull out the victory.
Weather permitting, MBU will play a non-conference contest Tuesday (4/2, 6 p.m.) at Washington & Lee before hosting Southern Virginia Friday (4/5, 4 p.m.) and Saturday (4/6, DH at 2 p.m.) in another USA South three-game weekend series.
