The Mary Baldwin University Fighting Squirrels proceed into the post-season for the USA South softball tournament after splitting the double-header today with the Southern Virginia University Knights. The first win went to the Knights as they won 3-2 and the second win was snatched by the Fighting Squirrels as an 9 run comeback leads them to a 7-15 victory in the bottom of the 6th inning.
Mary Baldwin started the first game hot with 2 runs on 3 hits. Southern Virginia slowly battled their way back to the lead by scoring a run in 3rd and 4th inning and eventually won out with the game-deciding run being scored on an error by the home team. Although Mary Baldwin ultimately had more hits than Southern Virginia, the small things added up to result in the Knights taking game 1 of the double header.
In the second game this afternoon, Mary Baldwin again started hot by scoring 2 runs in the first inning again thanks to a 2-run homer from #11
Hadley May. The Fighting Squirrels then scored two more runs in the bottom of the 4th inning only to be met with tough hitting as the Knights had a 5 run 5th inning making it 5-4. MBU answered them by retaking the lead in the 5th with 2 more runs only to be met with 2 runs as SVU took back the lead in the top of the 6th making the game 7-6. The Fighting Squirrels wouldn't go quietly and then exploded with a 9 run 6th inning in the bottom of the 6th. Mary Baldwin ended the inning with 4 walks and 7 hits ending the game in a mercy rule and a final score of 7-15 for the second game.
Key contributors for the Squirrels' double-header consisted of #11
Hadley May, who batted 6 for 8 with 7 RBIs, a double, and a 2 home runs, #2
Leanna Rankin, who batted 4 for 6 with 3 walks, 2 runs scored, and a stolen base, and #13
