The Mary Baldwin offense pounded out 18 hits in two USA South baseball games against Southern Virginia Saturday, but a shortage of "rally innings" left the Fighting Squirrels on the short end of the final scores as the Knights (10-13, 6-6 USA South) posted 12-2 and 5-3 victories.
In Game One, both teams scored twice in the first inning, but the visitors scored in five of the next eight innings to gradually pull away for the win.Â
Michael Robertson had three of MBU's eight hits in the game while
Noah Kessler and
JT Stevenson each had RBI hits in the first inning. Winning pitcher Zach Geersten had three hits, a run and four RBI, including run-scoring hits in the second and seventh innings. Geersten, who improved to 5-0 for the season, spread out seven hits over 6.1 innings to get the win.
In Game Two, Southern Virginia jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead, but RBI hits by
Michael Muller,
Josh Lallo and
Tyler Smith eventually cut SVU's lead to 4-3. An insurance run by Geersten in the ninth finished the scoring. In addition to the RBI hit in the eighth, Smith drew three walks to help MBU's attack. Stevenson,
Carter Attard and
Blake French each had two of MBU's 10 hits.
Pending the weather, the Fighting Squirrels are scheduled to play non-conference contests this week at Eastern Mennonite (4/10) and against Hampden-Sydney (4/11) before hosting USA South rival Pfeiffer for a three-game weekend series (4/13 and 4/14).
