Women's Soccer Offense Surges Late In The First Half On The Way To A 3-1 Win At Regent

Box Score Mary Baldwin's offense surged late in the first half, scoring three times in a 10-minute span, on the way to a 3-1 non-conference women's soccer victory at Regent Wednesday.  It was the first win of the season for the Fighting Squirrels under new coach Sunny Gelnovatch.

Freshman Stori Maybank tallied her first career goal in the 24th minute off free kick from the left sideline.  Maybank outbattled the Regent defender to knock the ball into the left side of the net for MBU's first lead of the season.

Maybank then assisted on the first insurance goal off a corner kick, when senior Sarah Gruntowicz knocked it home for a 2-0 lead.  A minute later, freshman Kendall Carr broke loose on the right side and shot it perfectly past the goalie inside the left post for a 3-0 lead.

MBU, which outshot the hosts 16-4 (8-4 shots on goal) lost the shutout attempt in the 75th minute with an own goal.  Senior keeper Maddy Vinson was credited with three saves for the Fighting Squirrels.

Mary Baldwin returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 11, with a non-conference match at Randolph (7 p.m.), then play at home two days later against Averett (4:30 p.m.).
