Junior forward
Raymond Benton recorded his fourth double-double of the season, dropping in a game and career-high 28 points and adding a game-high 11 rebounds, to lead Mary Baldwin (9-5, 4-0 USA South) to a 94-93 USA South men's basketball victory over visiting Pfeiffer (5-6, 1-2 USA South) Saturday.
It was Benton's fourth double-double of the season.  Graduate students Quintin Hart (22 points) and Ignacio (18 pts.) combined for 40 points from the perimeter while freshman guard D.J. Via chipped in 10 markers and six rebounds for MBU, which extended its win streak to five games.
Ignacio was strong in the first half, hitting four long-range shots in helping the Fighting Squirrels build an 11-point lead twice midway through the period and gain a 13-point lead with three minutes left in the half. Pfeiffer battled back to within six, 54-48, at the break.
The Fighting Squirrels maintained the lead, re-building it to 13 points, before the Falcons went on a 20-6 run for an 87-86 lead after Pfeiffer's Doug Smith converted a pair of free throws with 3:31 left. The teams traded points and baskets the rest of the way, with Hart hitting what proved to be the game-winning bucket with 1:17 left. After missed opportunities by both teams, the Falcons had possession at the end, but missed a 12-foot jumper to keep the Fighting Squirrels undefeated in conference play.
After winning three conference games (all at home) in five days, the Fighting Squirrels have a week to prepare for a trip to Methodist on Saturday, Jan. 18 (2 p.m.).
