Mary Baldwin's balanced offensive attack, with five players finishing in double figures, keyed the Fighting Squirrels' 87-63 USA South men's basketball victory over visiting Brevard Tuesday.
Graduate student guards Quintin Hart and
Jaden Ignacio shared team-high scoring honors, each with a pair of three-point baskets on the way to 16 points, followed by junior swingmanÂ
Zach Sloan with 15 points and a team-best six rebounds. Junior forward Ray Benton chipped in 11 points and freshman forward
Rony Hogarth dropped in a season-high 10 points.
MBU (7-5, 2-0 USA South) jumped out to a 16-3 lead in the first seven minutes of the game, but the Tornados (5-6, 0-2 USA South) bounced back to within four points (26-22) with 4:17 left in the half. The Hosts then doubled the lead by taking a 34-26 lead to the break.
In the second half, the balanced offense helped the defending conference champions build the lead to 20 points for much of the period and cruise to the win.
The Fighting Squirrels are scheduled for a back-to-back weekend, hosting William Peace Friday (Jan. 10, 6 p.m.) and Pfeiffer (Jan. 11, 2 p.m.).
