The Mary Baldwin women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought game Saturday, falling to the Methodist Monarchs 60–41 in the second contest of a conference back-to-back.
Freshman
Lanie Bethel opened strong, scoring seven of the Fighting Squirrels' 10 first-quarter points while shooting 60% from the field. Mary Baldwin found a spark from the perimeter in the second quarter, knocking down a pair of 3-pointers to stay within reach.
The Fighting Squirrels trailed 24–20 entering the third quarter, but Methodist tightened its defense and took control. The Monarchs attacked the paint effectively, shooting 9-for-13 from the field in the quarter and converting 8 of 10 free throws. Mary Baldwin was limited to seven points in the period.
Mary Baldwin outscored Methodist 14–10 in the fourth but couldn't close the gap.
Bethel finished with a season-high 15 points, marking her third straight game in double figures. Mary Baldwin is now 1-1 in conference play. Freshman
Madison Newbauer added seven points and made her prescence felt on defense with three steals.
Mary Baldwin visits Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday, Nov. 25, with tipoff set for 5 p.m.
