Mary Baldwin's Quintin Hart and
DJ Via combined for five of the team's nine three point goals and shared team-high scoring honors with 11 points Saturday in a 90-63 loss at Pfeiffer Saturday as both teams closed out the regular season.
The Fighting Squirrels finished the regular season with a 13-12 overall record and tied for fourth place with Brevard with a 7-7 mark in the USA South. MBU held the tiebreaker over Brevard in the standings and will be seeded fourth in the conference playoffs, which begin Tuesday against the fifth-seeded Tornadoes (12-11, 7-7 USA South) at MBU's PAC at 6 p.m.
In Saturday's game at the regular-season champion Falcons, Ray Benton added eight points and a team-high six rebounds for the visitors
the teams battled evenly through most of the first half. For 17 minutes, Pfeiffer held the lead but the visitors were never more than seven points behind and usually quickly responded to climb within a possession or two.
The MBU offense then went silent, scoring only three field goals in a stretch that started with four minutes left in the first half to deep in the second half. When
Logan Barbour drained a jumper with 7:19 left, followed soon after by a three-point goal by Via, to restart the offense. In the meantime, Pfeiffer scored 45 points to run away for the win.
