Zach Sloan ignited a strong three-point shooting performance to put together a pair of scoring surges in each half on the way to an 83-61 USA South men's basketball victory at William Peace Saturday.
Sloan was 4-for-7 from long range on the way to a team-leading 18 points, one of four Fighting Squirrels to score double figures against the Pacers. Ray Benton added 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds for MBU while
Jaden Ignacio had 11 points and Quintin Hart dropped in 10 scores.
For the game, the Fighting Squirrels shot 55% from the field (32-for-58) and 59% from three-point range (10-for-17) while outrebounding the hosts by a 36-28 margin.
William Peace jumped out of the gate for a 14-6 lead before MBU went on a 21-3 run to take a lead the visitors never lost. In the second half, WPU closed the gap to 43-41 before scoring 11-straight points as part of a 19-3 surge to put the game away. During that stretch, MBU hit four-straight three-point shots from the left wing, just in front of the team's bench.
The Fighting Squirrels, now 12-9 overall (6-4 USA South) and tied for third place with North Carolina Wesleyan, returns to the PAC this week for their final home games of the regular-season. MBU will host Greensboro Wednesday (2/12) at 6 p.m., followed by a Saturday (12/15) home game against Methodist at 2 p.m.
