Hadley May's school-record 31st career home run was absolutely crushed. A branch high on the tree in left field knocked it down before it flew to the MBU tennis courts. The no-doubt off the bat of MBU's catcher/DH was a three-run shot with two out in the bottom of the seventh with the hosts trailing by two runs and ignited a celebration at home plate that enabled the Fighting Squirrels to gain an 11-10 victory over Shenandoah University in Game 2 of a doubleheader, sending each team home with one win on the day.
The Hornets scored six runs in the third inning of the first game and despite several MBU challenges, the visitors emerged with a 6-2 win in Game 1. Shenandoah ended the day with a 6-6 overall record while MBU improved to 9-5 for the season.
After falling behind in the first game,
McKenzie Tillman smacked a two-run homer in the fourth to get MBU on the scoreboard. May had two of MBU's seven hits in the first game.
In the second game, MBU erased a 2-0 deficit with seven runs in the fourth inning.
Rachel Thompson and Tillman each had a two-run hit in the surge. Shenandoah bounced back with five runs in the fifth, then took a 10-8 lead with three runs in the top of the seventh. That set up May's heroics after Thompson reached base on a fielder's choice and Tillman put two runners on with her third hit of the game. Batting with two out, May fouled several pitches off before banging out her sixth homer of the season.
The Fighting Squirrels continue their homestand Saturday at 1 p.m. with another twinbill against Randolph College.
