Mary Baldwin's softball team took advantage of a pair of late-inning surges to gain a doubleheader sweep at William Peace Saturday. The Fighting Squirrels secured their first USA South win of the season in the 15-6 first-game win, then rallied to claim a 6-5 decision in the second game to improve to 16-10 overall this season (2-4 USA South).
MBU trailed in the opener, 4-2, but a two-run double by
Kendal Switala highlighted a six-run third inning, then Switala added a two-run base hit in the fifth inning as the Fighting Squirrels pulled away for the nine-run victory.
A number of Fighting Squirrels contributed to the 17-hit attack, including
McKenzie Tillman (three hits, two runs and three RBI),
Molly Thompson (three hits, three runs and two RBI),
Hadley May (two hits, three runs and two RBI), Jenna Dimicelli (three hits, run and RBI) and
Trinity Thomas (two hits, two runs and RBI).
In the nightcap, May and
Allison Crum each ripped RBI base hits in a three-run fifth inning that capped a rally from a 5-2 deficit to gain a one-run victory. MBU managed just six hits in the second game, with Thompson and
Emily Hall each getting two safeties.
In the pitcher's circle,
Reagan Frazier picked up the win in relief in both games. In the opener, Frazier allowed two earned runs on five hits and two walks in 5.2 innings. In the nightcap, Frazier battled through 6.2 innings, allowing five earned runs on six hits and three walks to improve her pitching record to 7-1 overall in 2025.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action with consecutive home doubleheaders next weekend, starting Friday (4/4) against Brevard College (1 p.m.), followed Saturday (4/5) with a twinbill against first-place Pfeiffer (noon).
