As Mary Baldwin has done many times over the second half of the 2025 season, the Fighting Squirrels battle their opponents until the middle innings, but things get away late in losses. It happened again Saturday as host Brevard College pulled out an 8-7 win in the first game and a 10-3 decision in the second game against MBU (6-33, 4-16 USA South).
In the first game, the Fighting Squirrels erased a 5-2 deficit with five runs in the top of the sixth.
Kelly Hackley Jr. and
Will Earnesty both contributed two-run hits in MBU's sixth inning. However, the Tornadoes answered with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, and the visitors couldn't convert an opportunity to tie the game or take the lead, leaving two runners on base in the last inning, to finish with the 8-7 final. Earnesty and
Michael Muller each had two of MBU's nine hits, and starter
Roman Borders was strong for six innings.
In the nightcap, Brevard held a slim 5-3 lead before putting the game away with a run in the eighth and four in the ninth. Muller,
Jacob Barber and
Tyler Morley all had a hit and an RBI for MBU. Similar to Borders in the first game, MBU starter
Nolan Alford kept the visitors in the game through six innings.
The Fighting Squirrels finish their fifth varsity season Sunday (4/27) with a single game at Brevard (1 p.m.).
