William Peace combined 13 hits with four walks (one intentional) and three Mary Baldwin errors to post a five-inning 12-0 victory over the Fighting Squirrels in an elimination game of the 2025 USA South softball playoffs at Pfeiffer University Friday.
MBU ended the season with a 22-18 overall record, which tied the team record for most wins in a season set in 2004, when the team finished with a 22-19 mark. It also ended the careers of seven seniors -
Allison Crum,
Emily Hall,
Allie Hurt,
Hadley May, Emily McCreary, Leanne Rankin and
Molly Thompson - who led the team to three-straight USA South playoff seasons and a 59-53-1 overall record in those three years.
Friday's loss was similar to Thursday's first-round setback, where MBU's opponents scored early and often to pull away for the win. William Peace broke loose for five runs on five hits and one MBU error in the top of the first and was never challenged. WP added a two-run homer off the bat of Adanya Day in the second inning, then four more in the fourth inning and one in the fifth.
Mary Baldwin managed five hits, two walks and was aided by one error, but the Fighting Squirrels were unable to get a run across the plate, stranding eight base runners in five innings, including the bases loaded in the bottom of the last inning. Thompson had two of MBU's five hits and May was on base three times thanks to a single and both MBU walks.
