Mary Baldwin women's basketball came up short on the road, falling to Greensboro College 81–66 on Thursday.
The Fighting Squirrels came out of the gates with energy, getting on the scoreboard first following a floater from freshman guard
Lanie Bethel. Mary Baldwin followed that up with strong defense on the other end, forcing a turnover and building early momentum. MBU held a 14–11 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter belonged to the Pride, as Greensboro flipped the game with a 23–13 quarter. Greensboro's defense tightened up, holding the Fighting Squirrels to 28 percent shooting (4-of-14) in the period. Greensboro took a 34–27 lead into halftime.
The third quarter turned into a back-and-forth battle, with both teams trading baskets and momentum. Mary Baldwin matched Greensboro shot-for-shot as the teams combined for 46 points in the frame, but Greensboro maintained a 57–50 edge heading into the final quarter.
Senior
DaVyne Johnson led Mary Baldwin offensively, finishing with a team-high 15 points. Bethel added 14 points and eight rebounds, while
Shyla Williams recorded her second double-double of the season and her fifth game with double-digit rebounds to pace the Fighting Squirrels on the glass.
Despite the strong third quarter, Mary Baldwin was unable to complete the comeback. Greensboro scored 24 points in the fourth quarter while holding MBU to 16 down the stretch to secure the 81–66 victory.
The Fighting Squirrels will return home Friday, January 23, to take on Methodist as they look to bounce back. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
