The Mary Baldwin men's basketball team posted a 65–55 road win at William Peace University on Friday night.
The Fighting Squirrels took control early behind balanced first-half scoring from junior
Jamal Ukaegbu and sophomore
DJ Via, who each scored eight points before the break. Via connected on two three-pointers, while Ukaegbu dominated the paint, scoring all eight of his first-half points inside. Ukaegbu finished the contest with a season-high 10 points.
Mary Baldwin capitalized on William Peace turnovers, converting 14 points off Pacers miscues, and carried a three-point lead into halftime.
Sophomore
Rony Hogarth fueled the Fighting Squirrels in the second half, scoring 15 points after the break and finishing with a career-high 19 points. Hogarth scored the first seven points of the half for Mary Baldwin and knocked down one of his three three-pointers during the period.
Mary Baldwin trailed by four with 11 minutes remaining, but responded with a decisive 21–4 run to build a nine-point advantage with four minutes left. Via sealed the victory at the free-throw line, converting three free throws in the closing moments.
The Fighting Squirrels took care of the basketball throughout the game, committing just four turnovers.
Mary Baldwin will continue conference play on the road, traveling to Misenheimer, N.C., to face Pfeiffer University on Saturday, January 10. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
