Mary Baldwin volleyball played two matches Sunday afternoon as part of a three-team tri-match. The Fighting Squirrels dropped their first match to Meredith College in straight sets, 25-14, 25-18, 25-11.
The Avenging Angels' offense proved difficult for Mary Baldwin to contain, as Meredith recorded 40 kills in the match. The Angels tallied 15 kills in the first set. Caitlyn Russell led all players with 11 kills.
The second set was Mary Baldwin's strongest, as the two teams battled to a 10-10 tie. Meredith's offense eventually pulled away, and Karaleigh Dodson's kill extended the Angels' lead to 20-15.
In the second match, Greensboro swept the Fighting Squirrels in straight sets, 25-11, 25-21, 25-20.
Once again, the second set was Mary Baldwin's strongest. The Fighting Squirrels jumped out to an early 6-2 lead but were unable to maintain their momentum. Greensboro mounted a comeback to take a 19-11 lead.
Freshman Ariana Guillen led all players with 12 assists in the match, while freshman Victoria Harrison led Mary Baldwin with six kills.
Mary Baldwin will return home Wednesday, Oct. 21, to face William Peace in a doubleheader beginning at 4:30 p.m.
