The Mary Baldwin University Fighting Squirrels battled throughout Tuesday night but fell to Randolph, 3-1, by set scores of 25-13, 22-25, 25-14, and 25-16.
After dropping the opening set, the Fighting Squirrels responded with a strong second set. Mary Baldwin overcame an early 9-5 deficit and went on to take the set, 25-22, to even the match at 1-1.
Freshman Victoria Harrison led the Fighting Squirrels offensively with 13 kills, while sophomore Morgan Flaherty added six kills while hitting .278. Senior Sabrina Birts contributed five kills, and freshman Ariana Guillen finished with 14 assists. Senior Alexa Ammerman paced the defensive effort with 11 digs.
Mary Baldwin continued to battle in the fourth set, taking a 14-13 lead before Randolph answered with a 6-0 run and ultimately closed out the set, 25-16.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action on the road against Salem College at 12:00 p.m.
