Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Via’s Buzzer-Beater Lifts Mary Baldwin Past Greensboro, 70-69

Sophomore DJ Via knocked down a buzzer-beater to give the Mary Baldwin men's basketball team a thrilling 70-69 road victory over Greensboro College.

The game proved to be a tale of two halves, as Mary Baldwin trailed 37-32 at halftime. Greensboro was fueled by a dominant first-half performance from DJ Jackson, who poured in 18 points before the break.

Despite the deficit, the Fighting Squirrels stayed within striking distance thanks to their three-point shooting. Mary Baldwin connected on 50 percent of its attempts from beyond the arc in the first half, compared to just 28 percent for the Pride.

Senior Raymond Benton and sophomore Rony Hogarth paced the Squirrels early, scoring nine points apiece in the opening half.

Mary Baldwin fell behind by eight early in the second half, but the Fighting Squirrels' defense forced timely turnovers to spark a comeback. A layup by junior Malachi Washington cut the lead to four. On the next possession, freshman Mason Wynne drained a three-pointer to trim the deficit to one. Another Greensboro turnover led to a layup by sophomore Marquis Dunklin, giving Mary Baldwin the lead.

The Squirrels continued to battle, eventually putting together an 8-0 run to build an eight-point advantage with 3:22 remaining.

With 38 seconds left, Mary Baldwin held a three-point lead. On the ensuing inbound, Greensboro forced a jump ball to gain possession. Jackson attacked the paint and finished to cut the deficit to one.

On the next Mary Baldwin inbound, an errant pass led to a Greensboro layup, giving the Pride a one-point lead with just seven seconds remaining.

Via then took matters into his own hands. He raced up the court, stopped at the free-throw line, and hit a tough turnaround jumper as time expired to seal the victory.

With the win, the Fighting Squirrels split the season series against Greensboro and strengthened their playoff push, currently sitting in the final postseason spot.

Mary Baldwin will travel to Methodist for its final road game of the regular season, tipping off Saturday, February 14 at 4:00 p.m.
