Mary Baldwin men's basketball fell to Southern Virginia 83-71 at home.
The Knights were powered by DJ Green, who scored 22 points — all in the second half. Tillman Johnson added 15 points, and Hyrum McConkie finished with 14.
Southern Virginia took a 36-28 lead into halftime behind a strong presence in the paint. The Knights grabbed 20 rebounds in the first half, including 14 defensive boards, and did not allow a Mary Baldwin second-chance point. Southern Virginia scored 18 of its 36 first-half points in the paint.
The Knights also capitalized at the free-throw line, attempting eight free throws to Mary Baldwin's two.
Jude Ballstaedt led the Knights with nine first-half points. Senior
Raymond Benton paced the Fighting Squirrels with eight points in the opening half.
The teams traded baskets early in the second half, beginning with a steal and 3-pointer by freshman
Nate Sutherland. Green answered with a 3-pointer of his own. After an MBU turnover led to a Johnson layup, senior
Corey Easton connected on a 3-pointer from the wing, scoring his first points since returning from injury.
Mary Baldwin trimmed the deficit to six as the home crowd came to life, but it was not enough. Green's second-half performance helped push the Knights' lead to 19 with 52 seconds remaining.
The Fighting Squirrels will look to rebound in their final home game of the season against Pfeiffer on Saturday, Feb. 21. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. Mary Baldwin will attempt to avenge an earlier loss to the Falcons.
