The Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels men's basketball team picked up its second consecutive victory with an 85–78 win over Regent on Wednesday night.
Mary Baldwin delivered a strong offensive performance, with four of five starters finishing in double figures. Junior center
Jamal Ukaegbu led the way, recording 20 points and 12 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
The Fighting Squirrels asserted their presence early, outrebounding the Royals 23–15 in the first half. Mary Baldwin scored 30 of its 44 first-half points in the paint, highlighted by two emphatic slam dunks from sophomore
Rony Hogarth and senior
Raymond Benton.
Mary Baldwin built its largest lead of the game at 15 points with 4:58 remaining in the first half and never looked back. The offense stayed hot as sophomore
DJ Via caught fire from beyond the arc, knocking down three of five three-point attempts on his way to an 11-point half.
Hogarth continued his strong play in the second half, finishing with 12 points and eight rebounds. Regent managed to lead just once all game, taking a brief 2–0 advantage at the opening tip.
The Fighting Squirrels will return home on Saturday, February 7, for a USA South Conference matchup against William Peace University. Mary Baldwin will look to complete the season sweep of the Pacers after earning a 65–55 road win earlier this year. Tip-off is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
