The Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels women's basketball team fell on the road Tuesday night, dropping a 70–59 decision to Salem.
Mary Baldwin placed two players in double figures, led by senior
DaVyne Johnson, who finished with a team-high 20 points. Freshman
Lanie Bethel added 19 points while dishing out three assists in a full 40-minute effort.
The Fighting Squirrels kept pace early, trailing by just four at the end of the first quarter before Salem used a strong second period to take a 26–22 advantage into halftime. Mary Baldwin struggled from the field in the opening half, shooting 10-of-26 overall.
Mary Baldwin found an offensive rhythm in the third quarter, knocking down three three-pointers in the period as Johnson and Bethel combined for 13 points. Despite the surge, Salem maintained control and entered the fourth quarter with a six-point edge.
The Fighting Squirrels continued to battle in the final frame, but Salem pulled away late behind efficient shooting and consistent scoring. Mary Baldwin was unable to close the gap, as the Spirits secured the win.
Mary Baldwin will return to action Saturday, February 7 as they face Pfeiffer University at home, tipping off at 2:00 p.m.
