Mary Baldwin softball dropped both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Methodist, falling 6-2 in Game 1 and 8-0 in Game 2.
Game 1
Methodist used a four-run fourth inning to pull away and secure a 6-2 victory in the opener.
Mary Baldwin struck first in the second inning when freshman Skylar Meriwether drove in a run with a single to give the Fighting Squirrels a 1-0 lead. Methodist responded in the fourth, scoring four runs on a series of RBI singles and capitalizing on a defensive miscue to take control of the game.
The Monarchs added two more runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 6-1. Mary Baldwin picked up its final run in the seventh inning when Santrice Rush doubled to bring a runner home.
Meriwether led the Fighting Squirrels at the plate with two hits and an RBI, while Rush also contributed an RBI.Â
Game 2
Methodist completed the sweep with an 8-0 win in five innings in Game 2.
The Monarchs broke a scoreless tie in the second inning with a sacrifice fly, then erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach. The inning was highlighted by multiple extra-base hits and timely hitting, including a two-run double and a two-RBI double from Rachel Blanchard.
Mary Baldwin recorded five hits in the contest, with senior Cassidy Newcomb collecting two. Freshmen Emma Morris and Dana Micone also added hits for the Fighting Squirrels.
