Box Score STAUNTON, VA - Averett University remains in the #2 position
behind Meredith College in the USA South north division with a 3-0
win over Mary Baldwin this evening.
The visitors had little trouble defeating the Fighting Squirrels
in three sets (25-8, 25-19, 25-13).
With Alison Sparks serving, the Cougars built up a 6-1 lead in
the first set. Then, with the score 15-7, Sparks returned to
the service line assisting the visitors in a 6-0 run before a
service error gave Mary Baldwin a chance to come back with the
score 22-8. Averett's Lisa Santos kept the Cougars in control
with a kill. Brittany Daley added a service ace then an error
by MBC ended the first set.
Although Averett never gave up the lead, the second set proved
to be more of a battle. With the Cougars in the lead 8-1,
Mary Baldwin executed more offense but was never able to diminish
the early lead by Averett. The Fighting Squirrels finished
with a match-high 7 kills in that set.
In the third set, Mary Baldwin started out much stronger
trailing only 5-4. The visiors then built their lead and
easily took the set and the match.
Averett finished with 37 kills and 34 service aces.
Katelyn Rice lead Mary Baldwin with 6 kills. Sara
Valdivieso added 13 assists and 11 digs for the Fighting
Squirrels.
Mary Baldwin will be back in action Saturday when they travel to
LaGrange to play LaGrange and Huntingdon before returning to play
Ferrum October 29.
