FERRUM, VA – The Mary Baldwin College Tennis Team traveled to Ferrum, Virginia today to
participate in a USA South Conference matchup with the Panthers of Ferrum College. The
Fighting Squirrels took home their first win of the season by defeating Ferrum 7-2.
Mary Baldwin took an early lead (2-1) after the completion of the doubles matches. Number one doubles, consisting of Alexa Cincinnati/Alayah Austin, and number three doubles, Sakurako Ishii/Brenda Ajavon, defeated their opponents 8-2 and 8-1 respectively. Number three doubles, made up of Miangel Hite/Jeni-Lee MacLaughlin fought hard but were not able to pull off the win and lost 7-9.
In singles action, the Fighting Squirrels continued to dominate with numbers two, three, four,
five, and six winning their matches. Alayah Austin (#2) defeated Ashley Foster in a hard fought 6-4, 6-7 (6-8), 10-7 victory. Jochebed Koomson (#3) defeated her opponent, Kelsey Nicely, 6-4, 6-2. Miangel Hite (#4) defeated Kisainya Miller 6-2, 6-2; while Jeni-Lee MacLaughlin (#5) defeated her competitor, Raquel Ramseur, in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-2. Sakurako Ishii defeated
Hannah Blake 6-1, 6-2.
Mary Baldwin College 1-6 (1-3 USAS) will continue conference play this weekend by hosting Methodist University on Saturday at 10:00am and Averett University Sunday afternoon.
