STAUNTON, VA – The Fighting Squirrels tennis team hosted the Cougars from Averett
University in a USA South duel match today. Mary Baldwin played hard but was not able to
capitalize. Averett won 8-1.
Numbers one and two doubles, Alexa Cincinnati/Alayah Austin and Miangel Hite/Jeni-Lee
MacLaughlin, played steady but fell short losing 6-8 and 4-8 respectively. Third doubles, Jochebed Koomson/Sakurako Ishii, were defeated 0-8.
The match-ups in singles were close and the Fighting Squirrels put up a fight but were unable to finish. Number one singles, Alexa Cincinnati, took her opponent to three long sets but lost 6-4,
2-6, 1-6. Numbers two and three singles, Alayah Austin and Jochebed Koomson, battled the
whole match but were overcome 3-6, 3-6 and 1-6, 4-6 respectively. Miangel Hite, number four
singles, lost 1-6, 0-6 and Jeni-Lee MacLaughlin at number five singles lost 4-6, 1-6.
Mary Baldwin's lone point came from Sakurako Ishii, who played at number six singles and defeated Averett's Angelica Orlikouski 6-4, 6-1.
Mary Baldwin (1-8, 1-5 USA South) continues conference play at William Peace on Sunday,
March 29th.
