Box Score STAUNTON, Va. – The Mary Baldwin University men's soccer team held on for a 4-3 victory against Greensboro at SMA Worth Field on Wednesday.
The Fighting Squirrels move to 5-4 overall and 2-2 in league play. Meanwhile, the Pride drop even at 4-4 on the season and 3-1 in the USA South.
GC started the scoring in the seventh minute as Jordy Briceno scored with an assist from Christian Thomas to put the Pride up 1-0. Just 60 seconds later, Ousmane Dansoko headed home the equalizer after Dominic Fleming played a corner kick to Eddy Casco for the assists. Joel Gonzalez-Ramirez put Greensboro up again in the 10th minute as he took a rebound and scored with an assist by Darli Mihindou, 2-1. Dansoko buried another goal after taking a free ball in the box at the 15:17 mark, 2-2.
The tie score held through halftime before Fleming fired a shot past the Pride keeper in the 53rd minute to put the Fighting Squirrels ahead, 3-2. Brandon John took a cross from Marcos Sasia to add an insurance goal as MBU went up 4-2 with 10 minutes left to play. The Pride got one score back in the 85th minute but the Pride fell short as the game went final.
Jackson Davis stopped three shots in the win, while Elmer Martinez and Ronan Lawrence combined for four saves in the loss.
GC outshot MBU 20-13, while also holding a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28, for a road match at William Peace beginning at 2:30 pm.
