Meredith University's Meredith Warrick converted a penalty kick in the last five minutes of the match to give the Avenging Angels (4-3-5, 3-1-2 USA South) a 2-1 USA South Athletic Conference women's soccer victory over host Mary Baldwin Friday.
MBU senior
Shea Rider drilled a shot, her third goal of the season, in the 17th minute that gave the host Fighting Squirrels (2-8-2, 1-3-1 USA South) the first goal of the contest. Less than two minutes later Meredith's Claire Wagner found the back of the net to even the match.
Both teams had several quality opportunities, but the score was still level until late in the game. MBU was unable to convert a penalty kick in the 75th minute, but the visitors converted their opportunity in the 86th minute to gain the win.
The Fighting Squirrels will travel Monday (10/16) for a re-scheduled game at Salem College (3 p.m.), then host non-conference rival Marymount (Va.) University Wednesday (10/18) at 4 p.m.
