Mary Baldwin goalie
William Batt recorded 11 saves and the defensive unit denied Southern Virginia at the goal line twice in the second half, but it wasn't enough as the Fighting Squirrels (1-12, 1-3 USA South) suffered a 3-0 USA South Conference setback at SVU Wednesday.
SVU's Benjamin Simister scored a pair of goals, one in the second half off a deflection in front, to lead the hosts to victory. Tanner Gondor put one just inside the far post for the third goal in the final four minutes of the contest for the Knights (8-4-3, 2-2-1 USA South).
Batt was strong in goal as the hosts outshot the Fighting Squirrels, 26-4. He also got help from his friends as senior defender
Stephen Blair re-directed one ball that was going into the net just before it crossed the goal line in the second half, and
Niyongabo Raphael did the same a few minutes later.
The Fighting Squirrels, who have three more conference games left in the drive to qualify for the playoffs, play their final game at SMA Worth Field Saturday against Pfeiffer at 2 p.m. Senior Day ceremonies will be held prior to the start of the match.
