Mary Baldwin's defense limited Pfeiffer's opportunities on Senior Day at SMA Worth Field Saturday, but the Falcons (7-6-1, 3-3-0 USA South) broke through for the only goal of the match in the 77th minute to pull out a 1-0 USA South Conference men's soccer victory over the Fighting Squirrels (1-13, 1-4 USA South).
Prior to the kickoff, MBU seniors
Stephen Blair (#6) and Lyelson Tavarez (11) were honored for their career contributions to the men's soccer team.
The Fighting Squirrels midfield and defensive units continually frustrated the Pfeiffer attack throughout the scoreless first half and most of the second half, blocking dozens of shots and passes in Pfeiffer's offensive third of the pitch, then kicking the ball deep and out of jeopardy. Late in the game, Nico Soriano found the back of the net off a scramble in the goal mouth to lift Pfeiffer to the win. Â
MBU has two more matches to play this season, both on the road this week. The Fighting Squirrels play a make-up game at William Peace Tuesday (10/24) at 3 p.m. and close out the season Saturday with a showdown at N.C. Wesleyan (2 p.m.).
