It was Senior Night Friday at the PAC, and the Mary Baldwin volleyball team honored
Savannah Figueroa and
Megan Andrews prior to the match against N.C. Wesleyan. But it was freshmen
Sabrina Birts and
Josie Sheets who stood out on the stat sheet after the Fighting Squirrels (2-22, 0-14 USA South) dropped a 3-1 decision to the Battling Bishops (7-19, 4-11 USA South).
Birts blasted 13 of MBU's 36 kills on the night, mostly in the first set that the Fighting Squirrels won by a 25-21 margin. Andrews also finished with six kills and had a team-leading four solo blocks on the evening. Sheets dished out 24 of MBU's 35 assists and shared the team lead in digs with classmate
Jaisley Tibayan, each with 11. Figueroa and junior Sol Rios-Rolon each added 10 digs, and Rios-Rolon had a match-high five service aces.
NC Wesleyan, which rebounded to win the next three sets by scores of 25-22, 25-18 and 25-22, was led by Sloan Martin with 17 kills, 15 assists, 14 digs and two service aces. Aajah Vazquez complimented Martin with 13 kills and eight solo blocks.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action Saturday with a trip to Raleigh, N.C., where they'll face Greensboro (2 p.m.) and William Peace (4 p.m.). MBU's final home match of the season will be Wednesday, Nov. 1, against Meredith.
