Despite a strong game in goal by junior keeper
Maddy Vinson, Mary Baldwin's women's soccer team suffered its first USA South Athletic Conference setback of the season by a 4-0 margin to Southern Virginia.
SVU (5-4-0, 4-0-0 USA South) scored two goals in each half to get the win. Emmy Giles contributed a goal and an assist in the opening 45 minutes for the visiting Knights, who are in first place midway through the conference season.
MBU (2-6-2, 1-1-1 USA South), in fifth place in the 10-team conference, was outshot 12-2 in the match, forcing Vinson to make several diving saves to keep the Fighting Squirrels in the game. Southern Virginia also had a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Fighting Squirrels, who are in the midst of playing four home games in a five-game stretch, will return to SMA Worth Field Saturday at noon against sixth-place Methodist as part of MBU's annual Family Weekend festivities.
