Senior guard
Quentin Hart totaled 21 points, all on 7-for-12 shooting from long range, but Mary Baldwin's late rally fell short as the Fighting Squirrels (1-1) dropped an 86-78 men's basketball decision to visiting Washington & Lee (3-1) Wednesday at MBU's PAC.
W&L, behind explosive performances by Robert DiSibio (26 points, 4-for-8 from outside the arc, 11 rebounds) and Jack d'Entremont (24 points, 8 rebounds), pulled away from the hosts for a 46-35 halftime lead, built the lead several times to the high teens, then held off a last minute charge by MBU to post the victory. Â
The Fighting Squirrels rallied from an 80-64 deficit with just over three minutes to within six points in the final seconds before two d'Entremont free throws ended the scoring. Hart had a pair of threes while
Logan Barbour had one during the late run.
MBU's surge helped balance out the offensive stats as W&L shot 41.9% from the field (31-for-74, 9 threes) while MBU finished at 40.3% (27-for-67, 16 threes). But the Fighting Squirrels missed some critical free throws down the stretch (8-for-13 for the game, 61.5%) and were outrebounded by a 55-33 margin.
Mary Baldwin will be back on the court this weekend in a tournament at Marymount University in Arlington, Va., starting with a clash vs. the University of Dallas Saturday at 3 p.m., followed by Sunday's second-round matchup against either Albright or the host Saints (time tba).
