Wilson scored the first five points of the game, increased the lead to 9-2, and despite closing the gap to a one possession game on more than a dozen occasions, Mary Baldwin was never able to overcome the deficit in a 63-57 non-conference women's basketball loss to the Phoenix (4-6).
Freshman guard
Aryauna Brent scored a game-high 14 points and added eight assists to lead the hosts. Seniors
Codie Heilig and
A'Cetta Farrait each added 13 points while
Gianna Gilmore chipped in 11 scores. Gilmore also ripped down a game-high 15 rebounds for an MBU double-double.
Laela Robinson led all scorers with 19 points for the Phoenix, including three of the team's four long-range shots. Adrianna Stricek had a double-double for Wilson with 12 points and 13 rebounds.
MBU shot 22-for-69 from the field (31.9%) and hit just three of 19 long-range shots (15.8%). Wilson was 22-for-58 from the field (37.9%), including 4-for-13 from three-point range (30.8%).
The Fighting Squirrels (2-8) now have two weeks off for the holiday break and to prepare for the next action, a non-conference clash at Randolph College on Dec. 31, 2023 (2 p.m.).
