Mary Baldwin's senior trio of
Jaden Ignacio,
Vernon Fraley and
Quentin Hart each scored in double digits, combining for an 8-for-13 performance from three-point range, and led an emotional, physical effort against the defending NCAA Division III men's basketball champions, Christopher Newport. The visiting Captains were able to hold off the upstart Fighting Squirrels to claim a 64-61 non-conference victory Saturday at the PAC.
Ignacio topped the MBU score sheet with 15 points, including consecutive twisting acrobatic drives to the hoop in the first half. He also hit a pair of threes at key times to keep the hosts close. Fraley added 13 markers, including 3-for-4 from outside the arc, and battled inside defensively against the taller Captains. Hart hit all three of his long-range shots and was the third MBU player in double figures finishing with 11 points.
Christopher Newport gained an early lead (15-7), but the hosts battled back and played neck and neck with MBU. The teams traded the lead eight times in the contest, and neither team could gain more than a two-possession advantage in the last 30 minutes of the contest. CNU's Jahn Hines, who finished with 19 points, hit two free throws with 2:32 left to break a 58-58 tie, then added a jumper with 1:40 left for what proved to be the game-winning points.
Fraley and Hart, along with
Zach Sloan and
Mekhi Reid (team-high eight rebounds), all battled foul trouble, each finishing with four as MBU was whistled 22 times while CNU had just 14 fouls.
Leading the visiting Captains was Trey Barber, who was 9-for-10 from the field on the way to a game-high 22 points. Barber also shared game-high rebounding honors with teammate Ian Anderson, each with nine, as CNU finished with a 49-30 advantage on the boards.
MBU will take the week off for final exams before returning to action with four games in seven days, starting with a non-conference clash Saturday (12/9) at Randolph College (2 p.m.).
