Zach Sloan scored a team-high 12 points and led a balanced attack as the Mary Baldwin men's basketball team snapped a three-game slide with a 67-48 non-conference victory at Randolph College Saturday.
Joining Sloan in double figures in the scoring column was junior
Luke Ogle and senior
Vernon Fraley, each with 11 points, and senior guard
Quentin Hart with 10 scores. Ogle also contributed seven rebounds, two steals and three of MBU's four blocked shots. Fraley snared six caroms and had a pair of long-range goals, as did Hart. Mekhi finished with a team-best 12 rebounds as the visitors held a 50-38 advantage on the glass.
The Fighting Squirrels started strong, eventually building a 25-7 lead midway through the first half before settling for a 31-18 advantage at the break. The hosts were perfect on eight tries from the free throw line to cut into MBU's lead.
Randolph, which was led by Danny Bickey with 12 points and six rebounds, continued to battle early in the second half, eventually cutting MBU's lead to five points (51-46) on two Bickey free throws before the visitors went on a 16-2 run in the final 5:25 to clinch the victory.
Mary Baldwin improves to 3-4 overall heading into Monday's exhibition game at NCAA Division I Hampton (7 p.m.). The Fighting Squirrels also face Ferrum at home Wednesday (6 p.m.) and play at Eastern Mennonite Sunday (Dec. 17, 2 p.m.) before taking time off for the semester and holiday break.
