It was 364 days ago that Mary Baldwin's women's basketball team registered a USA South Conference victory, a 61-49 decision over Pfeiffer at the MBU PAC. Saturday, the Fighting Squirrels rallied in the final seconds to do it again, securing a 38-37 road win at Pfeiffer.
Senior forward
A'Cetta Farrait, who scored MBU's first four points in the game, also dropped in the last two on a layup with 12 seconds left to lift MBU to its first road win vs. a conference opponent since the 2021-22 campaign. The Fighting Squirrels snapped a four-game losing streak and improved to 2-5 overall, 1-2 in USA South Conference play.
Farrait was MBU's scoring leader and shared game-high scoring honors with a pair of Falcons - Alexis Bynum and Miya Horton - all with 10 points.
Gianna Gilmore (eight rebounds),
Angel Crowder and
Codie Heilig all supported Farrait with eight points.
Imari Knight was critical to the win with a game-high 12 rebounds as the visitors held a 39-31 advantage over the hosts on the glass.
Pfeiffer was strong out of the gate, gaining a 14-8 lead at the end of the first 10 minutes. MBU rallied by outscoring the hosts in the middle two quarters by a 21-11 margin, before the teams went neck-and-neck down to the wire. Pfeiffer erased MBU's advantage to tie the game at 32 with just under five minutes left in the game. After trading the lead several times, Horton eventually drained a short jumper in the paint off a fast break with 50 seconds left to give the hosts a one-point lead, setting up Farrait's game-winning hoop.
The Fighting Squirrels will take the week off for final exams before next Saturday's (12/9) trip to Greensboro for a USA South Conference clash against the Pride (3 p.m.).
