The Mary Baldwin women's soccer defense was tested throughout Wednesday's non-conference clash at Roanoke, but fared well in a 3-0 setback to the Maroons (3-2-2).
Roanoke fired 30 shots in the match, 15 on target, but the defense led by goalie
Maddy Vinson and defenders
Kiley Marston,
Kaitlin Bower,
Charlotte Galloway and
Harmony Crawford helped keep the Fighting Squirrels in the match. Vinson was credited with 11 saves.
Morgan O'Neil scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 21st minute, but the MBU defense kept Roanoke's offense silent until the last 14 minutes of the match, when Rebecca Carr broke through with a pair of scores for the Maroons.
Mary Baldwin returns to the pitch Saturday with a trip to Meisenheimer, N.C., to face the Pfeiffer Falcons in a USA South Conference class, beginning at 2 p.m. This conference match begins MBU's run to try to secure a third-straight playoff bid.
