Mary Baldwin senior Shea Rider scored what proved to be the game-winning goal midway through the first half, and freshman Eve Diep added an insurance tally early in the second half to lift the Fighting Squirrels to a 2-0 win at Pfeiffer in the USA South Conference opening game for both teams.

MBU snapped a three-match losing streak, including two-straight shutout losses, but Rider took care of MBU's attack by scoring in the eighth minute off an assist by junior Sara Gruntowicz.  It was Rider's team-leading second goal of the season and her 15th career score.  Diep padded the visitors' lead in the 56th minute with help from classmate Harmony Crawford.

Junior keeper Maddy Vinson denied the Falcons four times on their seven overall shots to record her third shutout of the season.

The Fighting Squirrels have a week to prepare for their next match against USA South rival William Peace, which kicks off in Raleigh, N.C. on Sept. 30 at 2 p.m.
