Mary Baldwin women's soccer battled from behind the entire second half Saturday at William Peace, and in the last five minutes the Fighting Squirrels were rewarded when junior
Sara Gruntowicz scored the game-tying goal in a 1-1 final against the Pacers in USA South conference play.
Gruntowicz, off an assist from Breanna Kehoe, found the back of the net for the second time this season with 4:02 left in the match. That goal offset WPU's goal, scored by Shaelyn Webb, late in the first half.
Mary Baldwin held the statistical advantage in the match, outshooting William Peace by a 20-9 margin (10-5 shots on goal) and had seven corner kicks to just one for the hosts. Keeper
Maddy Vinson recorded four saves in goal for the visitors.
The contest turned physical as 25 fouls were whistled (seven for each team in the first half) and five yellow cards were shown.
The tie kept MBU undefeated in conference play with a 1-0-1 record (2-5-2 overall) heading into Tuesday's local conference showdown against Southern Virginia. The Fighting Squirrels and Knights will play at SMA Worth Field on MBU's annual Apple Day celebration, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
