Senior forward
Vernon Fraley posted his second double-double of the season and was one of four Mary Baldwin players to finish in double figures, but the Fighting Squirrels men's basketball team snapped a six-game win streak with a 78-75 loss at North Carolina Wesleyan Saturday.
Fraley finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds for MBU (9-8, 5-1 USA South), which still sits in first place in the USA South despite suffering its first conference loss of the season. Guards
Jaden Ignacio (16 pts., 4 assists),
Brett Asbury (14 pts., 6 rebs., 4 assists) and post player
Luke Ogle (13 pts., 5 rebs.) also contributed for MBU.
NCW put five players into double figures in the scoring column, led by Austin Manley with 15 points. Â
The teams played evenly throughout much of the game, although the Battling Bishops were able to extend their advantage to seven points twice in the middle of the first half before settling for a 37-35 lead at the break. MBU then scored the first 11 points of the second half, gaining their biggest lead of the afternoon at 46-37 on a
Zach Sloan free throw with 13:46 left.
NCW responded with four points and stayed within reach of the Fighting Squirrels until tying the game at 48 on an Omari Bolden free throw with 8:22 left. Down the stretch, neither team could gain a lead of more than four points. In the final seconds of regulation, Ogle drained a three-point goal to force overtime.
In the extra frame, the teams traded scores the entire five minutes. MBU had the chance to take the lead in the final 10 seconds on a shot in the paint, but it rimmed out and NCW's Justin Burden converted two free throws to give the hosts the margin of victory.
MBU returns to action Tuesday with a 7:30 p.m. game at Greensboro
