Despite battling foul trouble, Mary Baldwin senior guard
Quentin Hart knocked down 16 points, including 6-for-8 shooting from the field and 4-for-6 from three point land, to lead a balanced attack of six players with at least eight points as the Fighting Squirrels picked up their second-straight USA South road victory with a 74-63 decision at Methodist Saturday.
The inside duo of
Vernon Fraley (13 pts., 7 rebs.) and
Luke Ogle (11 pts., 4 assts., 4 rebs., 2 steals and 2 blocked shots) complimented the outside play for the winners, who finished 28-for-53 from the field (52.8%) and connected on nine long-range shots. Guards
Jaden Ignacio (9 pts., 6 rebs.),
Brett Asbury (8 pts.) and
Zach Sloan (8 pts., 4 rebs. and team-high 6 assts.) also contributed to MBU's balanced attack.
Asbury scored four of MBU's eight-straight points midway through the first half as the Flying Squirrels built a 21-10 lead. MBU slowly increased the lead to 38-23 at the break, with Sloan hitting a bucket just before the buzzer to cap the rush.
Less than four minutes into the second half, the lead ballooned to 21 points (50-29) on an Asbury fast-break and eventually to 26 points (63-37) on a Sloan jumper in the paint. Methodist, riding the shooting of Derrian Hicklan's game-high 26 points, whittled away at MBU's lead, closing the gap to a dozen in the last two minutes before the visitors ran out the clock for the win.
The first-place Fighting Squirrels (6-7, 2-0 USA South) get most of the week off before back-to-back home games Friday, Jan. 12 vs. Pfeiffer (7:30 p.m.) and Saturday Jan. 13 vs. William Peace (4:30 p.m.).
