Junior
David Romano scored his first goal of the season, the second of his career, on a penalty kick with just over three minutes remaining to lift Mary Baldwin to a 2-1 USA South men's soccer victory at Pfeiffer (4-6-3, 1-3-1 USA South) Saturday. The victory lifts MBU (3-8-2, 2-2-1 USA South) into fourth place in the conference standings as they battle for one of the six conference playoff berths.
Sophomore Shawn Gardner opened the scoring for the visitors with his first career goal in the 13th minute off an assist by junior captain
Edward Headley. Pfeiffer bounced back early in the second half to even the match, setting up Romano's game-winning score.
Pfeiffer outshot the Fighting Squirrels by a 13-5 margin (6-3 shots on goal), but keepers
Tucker Speak (three saves, 45 minutes) and
Preston Bentley (2 saves, 45 minutes) combined to keep the Falcons under wraps.
The Fighting Squirrels, who are in strong position to secure a USA South playoff nod for the first time since 2019, play a non-conference match at home against Regent Wednesday (10/23) at 4 p.m. That's the first of three-straight home games to finish the regular-season, followed by USA South clashes at SMA Worth Field against Brevard (10/26, noon) and Southern Virginia (10/30, 4 p.m.).
