Freshman
Erly Canales scored his first career goal Wednesday to tie the match against Regent University, but the visiting Royals (5-5-1) bounced back to break the tie with just over seven minutes left to gain a 2-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over Mary Baldwin.
Regent broke the scoreless tie in the third minute of the second half, but in the 79th minute, MBU junior captainÂ
Edward Headley lifted a pass over the defenders outside the top of the penalty area. Canales sprinted by the defense to knock the ball into the corner of the goal to even the match at 1-1. It was Headley's team-leading fourth assist of the season. Four minutes later, Regent scored on a rebound during a scramble in the goal mouth to take the lead and the victory.
The Fighting Squirrels held the advantage in shots (13-7) and shots on goal (6-3). Starter
Preston Bentley and
William Batt split the duties in goal, combining for one save.
Mary Baldwin returns to its USA South Conference schedule Saturday (10/26) in the second half of a men's/women's doubleheader at SMA Worth Field. The men's soccer team (3-9-2) will play Brevard at noon, followed by the women's team (3-9-2) against Pfeiffer at 2:30 p.m. Both MBU teams will be battling for a playoff berth and playoff position in Saturday's matches.
