For the second time in three matches, Mary Baldwin pulled away for a set win in a USA South Conference match, but it was host North Carolina Wesleyan who finished the event with a 3-1 team victory in USA South Volleyball action Wednesday in Rocky Mount, N.C.
The host Battling Bishops (3-18, 2-11 USA South) won the opening set 25-12, but the Fighting Squirrels (2-17, 0-12) bounced back to win the second set by a 25-21 margin. MBU broke a 19-19 tie by winning five of the next six points, including kills by sophomores
Delaney Bolbach, Brooklyn Prince and
Sabrina Birts, along with a service ace by freshman
Alexa Ammerman, to take a 24-20 lead that NCW could not overcome.
The last two sets went the way of the Battling Bishops by scores of 25-15 and 25-15.
Prince finished with 10 of MBU's 28 kills while Ammerman had a team-high 16 digs and two of the team's seven service aces. Senior Sol Rios-Rolon (13) and junior
Emily Penny (12) combined for 25 of MBU's 27 assists. Â
The Fighting Squirrels return to USA South action Saturday with a noon match at Pfeiffer. MBU will also compete against non-conference rival Guilford (2 p.m.) as part of a tri-match hosted by the Falcons.
