Emily Penny led Mary Baldwin Saturday in a tri-match at Pfeiffer Saturday. The Fighting Squirrels dropped a 3-0 USA South decision vs. the host Falcons (5-18, 2-11 USA South) to start the day, the lost a 3-1 decision to non-conference foe Guilford (10-11).
Against Pfeiffer, Mills had a team-leading eight kills while Penny topped the Fighting Squirrels with 11 assists as MBU fell 25-18, 25-15 and 25-16. Mills also had six digs while Penny chipped in two service aces, a kill and three digs. Also contributing were senior Sol Rios-Rolon with nine assists and
Alexa Ammerman with a team-leading eight digs.
MBU won the first set against Guilford, 25-19, but then lost by scores of 25-15, 25-18 and 25-18 to fall to 2-19 for the season (0-13 in USA South. Mills had six kills, an assist and four digs while Penny shared team-high honors with Rios-Rolon, each with 16 assists. Sophomores
Delaney Bolbach and Brooklyn Prince tied for the team best, each with seven kills. Prince also had 13 digs, supporting Ammerman's team-best 16 digs.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action at MBU's PAC Tuesday against USA South rival Meredith on Dig Pink Night and the first of two "Cans Across the Conference" donation nights. Fans are encouraged to bring canned food to donate to the Blue Ridge Food Bank in support of the annual program run by the USA South Conference that each member institution participates in.
