David Romano scored the first goal of the match on a first-half penalty kick, but after tying the match later in the first half, Southern Virginia pounded home two goals late in the match for a 3-1 USA South men's soccer victory over the Fighting Squirrels.
UPDATE - Southern Virginia (9-4-2, 4-3 USA South) earned the third seed in the 2024 USA South playoffs and will host the sixth-seeded Fighting Squirrels (3-11-2, 2-4-1 USA South) in Saturday's first round of the playoffs, beginning at 4 p.m. Â
The PK was Romano's third career goal gave MBU the 1-0 lead against the Knights. SVU evened the match five minutes later, also on a penalty kick, sending the match to halftime level at 1-1. The visitors then scored goals 77 seconds apart in the 79th and 80th minutes to seal the victory.
MBU outshot SVU by a 14-12 margin, although the Knights held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal.
This will be MBU's second trip to the USA South playoffs in the six years of varsity men's soccer.
