Dobbin's Second-Half Goal Lifts Mary Baldwin Men's Soccer To A 2-1 Victory Over William Peace

Sophomore Conor Dobbin collected a loose ball in the goalmouth and punched it into the back of the net, breaking a 1-1 tie midway through the second half, to lift Mary Baldwin men's soccer to a 2-1 USA South victory over visiting William Peace Saturday at SMA Worth Field.

The victory was MBU's second-straight on their home pitch and first conference win of the season, pushing the Fighting Squirrels (2-6-1, 1-1 USA South) into fourth place in the eight-team conference standings.

The Pacers opened the scoring in the 13th minute, but that was the only blemish on an outstanding game by the MBU defense and junior goalie Tucker Speak, who recorded eight saves in the match, including a handful of diving stops on high-percentage shots.

The Fighting Squirrels evened the match just 31 seconds after WPU's goal when freshman defender Jeremiah Cousins found junior captain Edward Headley breaking through the Pacers' defense.  Headley converted the pass for his third goal of the season, giving him a share of the team lead with classmate Yefferson Hernandez.

Play in the second half was fast at both ends of the field until MBU's Shawn Garner crossed a shot from the left side into the goal area.  Dobbin pounced on the loose ball and gave MBU the lead with his second goal of the season.  Speak and the MBU defense finished off the game with a stellar effort.

The Fighting Squirrels return to USA South action Tuesday (10/8) with a 4 p.m. clash at Greensboro.
