In front of a packed house that included most members of the 2023-24 USA South Championship team, junior
Zach Sloan tallied 31 points to lead Mary Baldwin men's basketball to an 88-62 non-conference victory over Christendom (0-3).
Prior to the game, the members of last year's championship team were presented championship rings. Once the game started, Sloan was on fire, scoring the team's first 13 points. He went on to reach the 30-point mark for the second time this season and third time in his career. Sloan, who had five three-point goals and team highs of six rebounds and six steals, has three of the five 30-point games in MBU's four varsity seasons.
Graduate student
Jaden Ignacio and junior
Raymond Benton each contributed 12 points as the Fighting Squirrels (3-1) built up a 43-32 halftime lead and cruised to the victory.
The Crusaders were led by Daniel Schultz with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
This is MBU's first of four games in an eight-day stretch before the Thanksgiving break. The Fighting Squirrels play Thursday (11/21, 7 p.m.) at Ferrum, followed by a Saturday (11/23) afternoon clash at home against Eastern Mennonite. MBU finishes the stretch of games next Tuesday (11/26) at Bridgewater.
