For the first time this season, five Mary Baldwin players finished in double figures in the scoring column, including a team-high 24 points by graduate student
Quentin Hart and double-doubles by
Raymond Benton and
Zach Sloan, as the Fighting Squrrels (4-2) men's basketball team defeated Eastern Mennonite for the first time in team history by an 88-75 margin.
Benton registered his second-straight double-double with 12 points and a team-best 11 rebounds while Sloan added 11 points, 10 boards and six of the team's 15 assists. Also hitting double figures in the scoring column were graduate guard
Jaden Ignacio (12 points, four assists) and freshman
DJ Via (11 points).
EMU (3-3) was led by Aaron Brooks, who dropped in 10 of 17 field goal attempts on the way to a game-high 25 points.
Hart drained seven three-point goals, most of them in the first half, while freshman
DJ Via hit all three of his long-range shots in the opening 20 minutes on the way to a 44-37 halftime lead. MBU was able to maintain the lead throughout the second half Sloan, Ignacio and Benton sharing the scoring load.
MBU stayed even with the Royals on the glass, each with 30 rebounds, while having a decided advantage in turnovers (13 EMU, 7 MBU).
Prior to the contest, both teams participated in an event supporting Morgan's Message, which strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community and equalize the treatment of physical and mental health in athletics. The goal is to expand the dialogue on mental health by normalizing conversations, empowering those who suffer in silence, and supporting those who feel alone.
The Fighting Squirrels play one more game, Tuesday (11/26) at Bridgewater (7:30 p.m.) before taking a Thanksgiving break.
