Codie Heilig scored 14 of her team-high 21 points in the second half, leading a rally that tied the game in the fourth quarter, but the Mary Baldwin women's basketball team couldn't keep the rally going and finished with a 70-62 USA South Athletic Conference women's basketball setback at Salem Saturday.
Angel Crowder added 13 points and
A'Cetta Farrait added 10 for the Fighting Squirrels, who also had a dominating rebounding game.Â
Gianna Gilmore ripped down a career-high 19 rebounds for MBU while Crowder and Farrait each added eight.
Salem's Dionne Sampson led both teams with 24 points, including half of the Spirits' long-range shots.
The hosts edged the Fighting Squirrels after the first 10 minutes, 22-16, and extended the lead to 32-25 at the mid game break. In the first 12 minutes of the second half, MBU outscored the hosts 25-18 and evened the game 50-50 on a bucket by Heilig, assisted by Crowder, with 8:40 left. Salem responded by scoring the next nine points in the game for a 59-50 advantage on the way to completing the eight-point win.
MBU (2-20, 1-14) returns to action Saturday, Feb. 10, with a clash at Meredith College, beginning at 2 p.m. MBU and Meredith played an overtime game a week ago at the PAC, with the Avenging Angels finishing with a 68-62 decision.
